Campaigner Development Fund
Two places were funded in a day. Can we fund two more?
Goal
To develop emerging campaigners from non-Western countries by helping them connect and learn with other campaigners at ECF 2014 (and beyond). The countries it would be especially interesting to get participants from include:
- South Africa because of decades-long history of campaigning (anti-appartheid, HIV-AIDS)
- Brazil because of recent protests around local services investment
- Turkey because of recent environmental and democratic reform protests
- Ukraine because of recent pro-EU protests
- India because of anti-corruption and anti-rape protests
- Russia because of protest movements
- Kenya because of growing interest in campaigning
- Iran because of 'Green Revolution'
- Tunesia because of Arab-spring
- Any other suggestions?
See the application process and deadline for applying.
What's Needed?
Bringing a participant from a southern country to an ECF event costs about £1,500 per person. This covers the visa, travel, accommodation, meals and some petty cash. FairSay is donating free places to attending ECF, will make up the 'processing fee' taken by PayPal (so the full amount goes into the fund) and will use time to help identify participants, help them get their visa, book travel and accommodation (others welcome to help with this too), etc.
PS - it isn't called the 'Mandela' Fund because 1) use of his name is not authorised, 2) it would claim authority and association that isn't there and 3) this is about more than Nelson Mandela, it is about the importance of developing campaigners of which he is one (amazing) symbol.
