Day 1 (Apr 13) 13:30

100 years of women-led activism (Esther Freeman)

Historically, working class migrant areas have been hotbeds of social activism. However women's involvement in these movements is poorly documented or missing entirely. Women from ethnic minorities are particularly sidelined. The small amount of women's history that is accessible is focused on a tiny number of white, middle-class women. As a result, minority communities can feel like the heritage isn't relevant to them.

The Women activists of East London project is developing a walking tour app that explores the history of women-led activism in the East London boroughs of Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest. It focuses on the themes of gender violence, the labour movement and social unrest/civil disobedience across two recent historical periods: the early 1900s and the 1960s-80s.

Human Centred Design for Campaigning (Tracy Frauzel, Greenpeace)

Human centred design is the latest innovation trend for commercial businesses and is increasingly being used by governments and development organisations to create and transform services, we wanted to see what would happen when we applied this process to campaigning. The Mob Lab recently completed a six month pilot adapting and implementing human centred design for campaign projects and is now rolling this process out globally in Greenpeace for people-powered campaigns. In this session I'll cover how we adapted and implemented the process and what we've learned from this approach to improve campaign planning and implementation.

Let's not leave the EU (Johnny Chatterton)

In two months, millions of people may vote for the UK to leave the EU. If you don't think that's a great idea please come along and we can talk about how we can use our collective skills and networks to vote to stay in. Note, we'll all be attending in personal capacities.

The ethics of dataveillance (Amber Macintyre)

How does your organisation use data? Do you think about how the use of data fits into the surveillance debate (otherwise known as 'dataveillance')? This session will give space for people to share common data practices and consider the ethical dilemmas raised by using data to engage and inspire audiences.

Hear my voice (Clare Lucas, Mencap)

The General Election is a time when the voices of people with a learning disability often go ignored but a time when they also need to be listened to more than ever. The Hear my voice campaign connected people with a learning disability and other campaigners with the candidates fighting for their votes. Come and find out more about the campaign, what it achieved and the legacy it has left behind.

Getting supporters active (Shaun Roberts and Katie Bannister, Which?)

Which? have more than doubled the number of actions taken by supporters in the last year. Find out how they did it and how you can do the same in your organisation.

Day 2 (Apr 14) 13:00

Email campaigning is dead, long live email campaigning by Esther Foreman

This is a highly interactive session exploring the pitfalls and promises of email campaigning for change.

Between 2006 and 2016 there are have been millions of generated emails to MPs. Some have been really successful and some have not just failed but alienated both houses to the issue. Research has shown that many MPs and Peers consider ecampaigning an unnecessary evil generated by robots and zombies. Many campaigners and charities consider a digital campaigning a cost effective and legitimate way to get their voice heard.

What’s gone wrong?

This sessions looks at whether or not they are still as effective as we think they are and explores where we need to be innovating for the same impact.

Bring your brains, your experience, your thoughts and your questions and be prepared to work hard.

Any questions, thoughts or comments on the session please tweet us out @socialchangeag

Evolution and innovation - what can we learn from our activist history? (Michaela O'Brien)

A handful of iconic movements such as the suffragettes dominate our thinking about the history of activism. How can we consider our rich and varied activist history, and how can it help us innovate today?

Dealing with trolls (Hannah Crib, Mencap)

There will always be people who don't agree with our campaigning. But what happens when this group gather together to form a vocal community? This is exactly the situation that Mencap find themselves in. Come along to find out how we are dealing with this, both externally and internally and discuss the best ways to tackle online trolling.

Liberate Tate - winning campaigns with creative intervention (Glen Tarman)

Internationally renowned art collective Liberate Tate just won a major 6 year campaign to end BP's sponsorship of art museum Tate. As artists they did so through exploring creative intervention, making art and a conscious intent to inspire others in how they work. What can NGOs, charities and activists learn from these approaches and strategies? Two NGO campaigners who take off the day job hats to be members of Liberate Tate offer their perspectives on making change happen through art and how 'traditional' campaigning might be enriched by drawing on some of what Liberate Tate has experimented with to such success as well as the work of others in the arts. A presentation and dialogue with Glen Tarman and Kevin Smith.
